Ocelot Waves of Light
Waves of Light is 6.2% summer IPA brewed with indie rock luminary Eric Bachmann Bolstered by boisterous New Zealand and Pacific Northwest hops, the collaboration heralds the triumphant return of Crooked Fingers and their slow-revealing seventh record SWET DETH, out now on Merge Records.
True to its title, SWET DETH is an LP that lyrically grapples with mortality and the passage of things. Bachmann’s songs do so, though, while also imbued with dry humor and radiant imagery. For all the stormy weather, there are sunrises and waves of light. Our Waves of Light – its name cribbed from a lyric found in buoyant Matt Berninger duet “From All Ways” – honors that luminosity.
The IPA bursts with bright notes of lychee, zesty citrus, apricot, and sweet peach from whirlpool additions of Citra and a Peacharine dry hop. (Bachmann wanted to use the latter cultivar, bred by New Zealand’s Freestyle Hops, as a nod to the Peach State, his home for the last 15 years.) Its grist, almost entirely Weyermann pilsner malt, is similarly kept light but flavorful. Bachmann says he often transitions from IPA to pale lager as the weather turns warm, so we sought to make a summer IPA suitably quenching for “swampy” Athens.
